As we watch our vacation budgets carefully, a question that arises is “Where’s a great destination with lots of variety?” Here’s an idea, how about a SoCal vacation? It’s got the beaches, theme parks, roller coasters, Hollywood and lots more.
Hawaii would be another option. You can almost feel that warm ocean water right now, but remember that there are offsetting advantages to the Golden State. For a discussion about differences between California and Hawaii vacations, check out the SoCal Vacations Guru. In Southern California you don’t need to worry as much about underwater rocks; also, the humidity is generally lower and the sunshine less intimidating. As we noted, the Hawaiian waters are warmer, but in the middle of summer, the cooler California water can be more invigorating.
A Hawaiian vacation does offer beautiful subtropical vegetation and fascinating Polynesian cultural experiences. But don’t forget the melting pot of many different cultures to be experienced in California, as well as the mountains, desert and coastline.
The beach is not the only attraction in Southern California. There are a half-dozen major theme parks to be visited. You could spend a week checking out the seven top-notch theme parks between San Diego and Los Angeles County. You will find world-class thrill rides at Knott’s Berry Farm and Six Flags Magic Mountain; the Six Flags roller coasters are particularly plentiful. Those parks both boast many coasters and similar adrenaline-pumping rides. In fact, they offer more thrill rides than Disneyland, although the Magic Kingdom does include some fast attractions such as the Matterhorn and Space Mountain.
Hawaii does not offer roller coasters, but does offer surfing on the North Shore of Oahu in the wintertime. California is probably a more budget-friendly summer travel option, but now and then you really do need to get over to Hawaii.
