Freeware Flac Converter
The acronym “FLAC” means “Free Lossless Audio Codec”. As the codec name suggests, this is an audio file encoding that always retains the quality of the original audio data (e.g. a CD track). Unlike other formats (e.g.) MP3, FLAC compression offers both great audio and a useful modicum of compression. In the past this codec was typically used for backing up CDs. However, with large capacity hard drives and fast Internet connections becoming more common, this format is now also used for normal listening and streaming music.
While FLAC is usually great for high-quality audio, sometimes you might need to convert it to a different format. For example, on mobile players file size still matters, and MP3 files take up way several times less space than FLAC. Another possibility is that while FLAC support is widespread among modern audio players, once in a while you will need to convert your Flac-encoded music to another format. The MP3 codec is supported pretty much universally.
To convert a .flac file to another format, download a FLAC converter. Here’s what to to look out for in a .flac to .mp3 converter :
* How easy it is to use. At the minimum, there should be a visual interface, and Windows shell integration. Comprehensible codec configuration are a definite plus, because audio conversion can end up as deep magic if if you’re forced to set everything up yourself.
* Time. This normally will depend on the selected codec and software configuration, but raw performance can be quite significant when you have to convert a large FLAC-encodec collection to a different format.
* Price. Luckily you won’t need to buy the program. There are great free .flac converters you can peruse.
Finally, I recommend using SUPER or another free converter to convert .flac files. dbPowerAmp is more user-friendly while other converters support a huge list of music encodings. Pick the right tool for the job.
