Most people when they hear the term training your dog, they immediately become defensive because there is a common misconception that training a puppy is a hard task. The truth of the matter though is that it is only as complicated as you choose to make it. One of the simpler commands as well as one of the first ones is teaching your puppy to come to you when it is called.
While there are many ways to teach this command, some can prove to be more difficult than others, but if you are wanting an easier way to teach your puppy to come when called then try by starting with a hungry dog and a handful of treats.
1) Start off by standing in front of the puppy while holding out a dog treat in your fingers. The treat should be easily seen by the puppy as well as roughly at the puppys height.
2) Now simply get the atmosphere exciting to your dog by putting on a great big smile and with a sweet and fun tone of voice, say “Sparky, Come!” Do not overdo the come command with too much excitement, just enough to get him to notice you and realize that you are happy.
3) By this moment, the puppy should have already realized that there is a treat in your hand and that you are happy and should start running towards you. Dont worry if the puppy does not immediately come to you as you can say the command again with a little more excitement.
4) Upon arrival to the treat, make an attempt to get the puppy into the sitting position before he is allowed to receive the treat. To do this simply stroke the back of the puppys neck while applying gentle pressure until he is seated all the while you are praising him in a gentle voice. Once the puppy sits, give him the treat.
5. Eventually drop the dog treats altogether and repeat the above steps, but offering praise instead of food when your dog comes to you.
