I recently learned that my father was diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus. He’s suffered from acid reflux for many years, but this was still surprise. Partially because I hadn’t really heard of Barrett’s Esophagus, but also because my father is actually a pretty healthy, strong man. So I am both trying to understand the relationship between GERD and Barrett’s Esophagus and come to grips with how my parents are aging.
You see, as my dad and mom grow older I grow more concerned with their health with each passing year. They both used to be such vital, healthy individuals. But these days it seems when I return home I learn about some new stressing development with either of their health care.
So since my father was recently diagnosed with Barrett’s Esophagus symptoms, I realized I needed to look into this matter so I can be more empowered and knowledgeable when handling my parents’ changing health.
I learned that Barrett’s Esophagus is something probably more people may be experiencing than realize it. While Barrett’s Esophagus isn’t necessarily deadly, it can often accompany more serious conditions such as stomach cancer symptoms and it can also be a precursor to esophagus cancer.
I also learned that Barrett’s Esophagus basically develops because of GERD. So if you think you might be experiencing early GERD symptoms (acid reflux or heartburn), I strongly suggest you start to take precautions now.
